Cooper Shield and students at St Bernadette's Primary Castle Hill

The CSPD Teacher Scholarship Program which ran for the first time last year, is now accepting applications from current Year 12 students who intend to enrol in an education degree in 2025.

To help students understand what the program is offering and how it can help support them in realising their career goals, we have been interviewing our 2024 scholarship recipients.

Cooper, the fourth student in our series of Q&A profiles, is keen to see other young men take up the call to teach and would encourage any Year 12 boys interested in teaching to apply for the scholarship.

Cooper Shield, Macquarie University, Bachelor of Education (Primary) & Bachelor of Arts

Which school did you attend?
I attended St Andrew’s College Marayong

Why did you decide to study teaching?
Teaching, having the ability to shape young people’s mindsets and create environments where students can enjoy learning, has always been a passion of mine. I also believe more males should be encouraged to enter the teaching profession, particularly as primary school teachers.

What advice would you give to students who are thinking about applying for a CSPD Teacher Scholarship?
Go for it! The CSPD scholarship has been amazing and created so many opportunities for me to further my development, as well as the benefits that come with the program.

What has been the best thing about being part of the scholarship program?
For myself, the best part of the scholarship program has been the opportunity to work as an Associate Teacher at St Bernadette’s Primary Castle Hill. Not only have I been able to join a welcoming community, but I’ve also been able to immerse myself and work with students first-hand, early on in my degree.

Have you had any practical teaching experiences or placements? If so, what do you enjoy most about working with students?
Working at St Bernadette’s, I’ve had plenty of experiences working with students. The most enjoyable part of that experience has definitely been forming positive relationships with students and seeing the improvements that those students are making when learning.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time outside of your studies?
Apart from being a massive Penrith Panthers supporter, I enjoy camping and going on nature walks.

What is your favourite memory from your own school experience?
I think some that stick out have to be my Year 12 Athletics Carnival or my Year 11 and 12 Religion class.
